KS3 students take part in their core PE lessons along with the rest of their tutor group. Throughout the year, all students will be given the opportunity to experience football, rugby, basketball, hockey, badminton, tennis, fitness training, athletics, and cricket, which ensures they cover all areas required in the PE national curriculum.
Additionally, students will be given the chance to take part in extracurricular training and matches within these sports both within The Peak Academy and against other BESD schools as part of the Westcountry Schools Sports League. Many of our students take great pride in representing The Peak Academy in this capacity and find it a very positive experience.
There will also be the option throughout the academic year for students to take part in bespoke workshops which focus on less mainstream physical activities. These opportunities are part of the curriculum which our students really enjoy.
All students in these years will take part in core PE lessons as they are used to from KS3. Activities at KS4 will have much more of a focus on effective participation and competition, although we are still looking to develop the skills and techniques that the students have learned from years 7 to 9. It is also possible at this stage that students who show a thorough understanding of the curriculum can personalise their learning so they can focus on the activities which motivate them best.
Students are currently studying a NCFE Level 2 sports course which will give them both the theory and practical skills to go onto a Level 3 sports course at college and beyond. The course has four units over two years, which include Participation in Sports, Anatomy and Physiology, Exercise and Nutrition, and a fitness unit. All work is coursework and assignment based. It is a very worthwhile course which allows learners to develop practical leadership skills and theoretical sports knowledge, as well as getting active and having fun.
Students at KS4 are also offered the option of gaining a qualification in BTEC sport. In addition to being assessed on their participation in a wide range of practical activities, students also learn about job opportunities within the sports and leisure industries, as well as how our bodies work when taking part in sport. This is a qualification which is popular at The Peak Academy, and our students are able to easily access and demonstrate their skills both practically and theoretically.
